Charging Display
DescriptionThe chimp charges along the ground (or less frequently, through the trees) and shows any or all of the following elements: throwing, branch dragging, branch swaying, slapping, stamping, flailing, drumming, raking, chest beating, and occasionally an attack on another individual. Always accompanied by hair erection, compressed lips face, and often by pant-hoots. Usually performed by adult males, but females occasionally display.
Context: It may occur when a chimpanzee arrives at a food source, meets up with or hears another group, or when it is "frustrated." Also occurs in dominance interactions when a chimp seeks to establish or maintain dominance.
